［副詞・形容詞の修飾］あまりにも， …すぎる， 必要以上に；［～ ... for O］(人・事)にとって…すぎる；［～ ... to do］ …するには…すぎる∥ This question is too difficult for me to solve (it). この問題は私には難しすぎる《◆ it の出没に注意： This question is too difficult to solve (^×it).》 / I'm afraid I did talk too frankly. あまり正直に話しすぎたのではないかしら / Tomorrow will be too late. 明日では遅すぎるでしょう / You expect too much of ［from］ her. 君は彼女に期待をかけすぎる / The desk takes too much space. その机は場所をとりすぎる.

【語法】 (1) 通例「too＋形容詞＋a＋名詞」の語順をとるが ... a too hot day とすることもある. (2) 複数または名詞を修飾する形容詞の前には too は用いられない：^× too hot days / ^×too hot weather. ただし， much， little などの数量詞と共に用いるのは可： too much time / too little money. (3) 形容詞化しない動詞的意味の強い過去分詞の場合は too の後に much を用いると堅い表現となる： I was too (much) disturbed by that news. その知らせにとても心配になった. (4) too を修飾するには much， a lot， far， a little， a bit， slightly， rather をつける： It's much too high. それはあんまり高すぎる
